Critical Care Medication Safety
Last Update: October 2007 Contact: Karen Cox, RN, PhD Summary: An emergency medication reference tool was created for adult critical care to provide quick reference for emergency medication administration. This tool was studied to quantify its advantages among clinicians, including physicians. Using vignettes we developed to simulate commonly encountered emergencies, attendings, residents, ICU nurses, and House Managers were more accurate using the tools in terms of dosing, preparation and administration. On-demand availability of the reference tool decrease medication ordering and/or administration errors for our most fragile patient populations (ICU, ER, Step-Down). |
